COLLARING OF NILGIRI TAHR AT WESTERN CATCHMENT,
MUKURTHI NATIONAL PARK
The Radio Collaring activity by Project Nilgiri Tahr was planned after conducting expert opinion meetings and an outcome of meticulous team fieldwork. It involves a range of experts from premier institutes like TANUVAS and WWF-INDIA.
- Radio collaring Nilgiri tahr at Mukurthi National Park, Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, Tamil Nadu was the first of its kind event for any mountain ungulate in India.
- To capture the Saddleback animal without chemical tranquilization, a team of experts and field staff captured the animal using a drop net method.
- The installed Radio collar was imported from Vectronics Aerospace based in Germany and the tracking receiver module imported from Telonics in the United States.
- This Radio Collaring will provide the movement data of Nilgiri Tahr including its Home range distribution, Physical activity like fodder preferences and exploratory behavior.
- The post-monitoring for one year is being done by the Project Nilgiri Tahr team along with the WWF team and field Staff.
- The Radio collar transmits signals which include GPS coordinates of animal presence and the receiver module gains data within maximum proximity tracking distance.
