World Photography day

  • World Photography Day, celebrated annually on August 19, honors the art, craft, science, and history of photography. The day commemorates the invention of the Daguerreotype, an early photographic process developed by Louis Daguerre in 1839, which marked the birth of practical photography.

  • The day is a celebration for photographers, both professional and amateur, who use photography as a powerful medium to tell stories, document reality, capture moments, and inspire change. Many photography contests, exhibitions, and workshops are organized globally to encourage people to share their photographic works and appreciate the impact of visual storytelling. World Photography Day also highlights photography’s ability to drive awareness on important global issues, such as conservation, climate change, and human rights.

  • On account of World Photography day on August 19, 2024, an online ‘Photography contest’ was conducted with the theme’ Conservation of mountain ungulates’. Totally, 17 wildlife photographers participated in the contest and the submitted entries were screened for originality. The evaluation committee comprising of Dr. Navaneethan, WWF-India, Mr. Chendura Sundaresan, Forest Range Officer, Dr. S. Priyanka, Senior Scientist cum Research coordinator, Dr. B. Subbaiyan, Senior Research Fellow, carefully scrutinized the entries for originality of the images. The images were judged based on their adherence to the theme, image resolution, and creativity. The top three winners were awarded a memento and a certificate, while all participants received participation certificates in recognition of their efforts.
